Why is Iowa such an important state during the elections?

It seams every year Iowa makes the biggest headlines when it comes to running for office. Whats wrong with Kansas, or kentucky, or Idaho? What is the big deal with Iowa?

    It holds the first caucus.

It kicks off full blown campaigning and determines the leaders in the pack. The first primary means no surprise candidates will show at the last minute. And it does not determine the Presidency. Dukakis finished third in Iowa and still got the nomination. George Bush Sr and Ronald Reagan did not win Iowa either.
