Question by wasicus: Where are the people who raved about the New Orleans disaster during the present midwestern floods?
After Katrina, the media complained that the response was not quick enough and blamed it on the Bush administration’s
dislike of black people.
Can we then conclude from the lack of media coverage and response by the Obama administration that Obama doesn’t like white folks?
Where are the Hollywood celebrities holding telethons asking for help in restoring Iowa and North Dakota and helping the folks affected by the floods? Where is good old Michael Moore?
Why are the media NOT asking the tough questions about why the federal government hasn’t solved this problem?
……Asking where the FEMA trucks and trailers and food
services are?

Why isn’t the Federal government moving Iowa people into free hotels in Chicago and Minneapolis ?
When will Spike Lee say that the Federal government blew up the levees that failed in Des Moines ?
Where are Sean Penn, Bono, and the Dixie Chicks?
Where are all the looters stealing high-end tennis shoes, cases of beer and television sets?
Where is the hysterical 24/7 media coverage complete with reports of shootings at rescuers, of rapes and murder?

Where are all the people screaming that Barack Obama hates white, rural people?
Where are Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt,
Oprah, and Ray Coniff Jr?
How come you will never hear about the Iowa flooding ever again? Where are the gov’t. bail out vouchers? The government debit cards?
I feel very sorry for the people of New Orleans for their suffering, but there is no difference between the value of the people of Iowa and value of the people of Louisiana .I am just wondering what happened!

Best answer:

Answer by Mike
The main reason is that the people in Iowa got up off their butts and filled sandbags instead of waiting for the Government to swoop in and save them.

It floods all the time in Iowa. In 1991 and 1993, Des Moines had major floods. The 1993 Flood was the first time in US history a city of 250,000 people did not have running water for more than a week. The folks of Des Moines didn’t riot, they simply patiently waited in line for their water bottles.

The 2008 Cedar Rapids flood illustrated the difference between “city” and “country” attitudes. When the flooding hit city leaders panicked, cracked open their Homeland Security packets and immediately sat on their hands while waiting for the government to save them, it was a mini-Katrina, sans all the rape and murder, and 2 years later several neighborhoods are still cordoned off and vacant. A few weeks later, the largest tornado in 20 years destroyed over half of the houses in two small country towns. By the time FEMA showed up in those rural towns, the locals had cleared the streets, tarped damaged roofs and removed most of the downed trees. The 2010 floods along the Missouri and localized flooding are no different.

It’s not the media, there just are not many victims in Iowa. What good is a news story about neighbors helping neighbors out? A screaming woman griping about nobody helping her sells more headlines, and hospitals where the white and asian doctors euthanize the indigent black patients are headline gold. We don’t get that in Iowa.

Dr. Rebecca Sachs Norris, associate professor and chair of religious and theological studies at Merrimack College, plays religious-based board games with her students.

North Andover, MA (Vocus) December 16, 2009

Dolls, action figures, and video games all dominate the wish list for many children this time of year. Not G.I. Joe, but rather Jesus Christ and Job, as well as board games such as Catholic-opoly, Missionary Conquest, The Great Mosque Game, have the sales of religious games and toys doubling annually.

Dr. Rebecca Sachs Norris, professor and chair of religious and theological studies at Merrimack College, is studying this phenomenon to better determine how and why religious-based games and toys are used, and their impact in areas as diverse as politics and psychology.

“Religious games are not only an important indicator of cultural values and practices, but they are also an influence on the formation of religious identity and principles,” said Norris.

Determining the origin of certain religious games is also part of Norris’ research. For example, the popular American game Chutes & Ladders is believed to be derived from a game invented by a Tibetan Lama in the 12th century. The object of the Tibetan game was to improve karma and gain ground towards enlightenment; a child playing Chutes and Ladders ascends based on good deeds.

Norris also co-authored a book on the topic of religious toys and games entitled “Toying with God” with Nikki Bado-Frlaick of Iowa State University. The book is scheduled to be released in February 2010.
